EAD already accounts for more than half of enrollments in private institutions
The data were presented this Friday (29) in a Panel that compiled information from the last 20 years of the public and mainly private educational scenario in the country, with the objective of thinking about higher education in Brazil, its sciences and technologies and its funding.
According to the survey, Brazil has increased the number of vacancies in universities by 5 times in the last 20 years. In 1995, 60% of enrollments were concentrated in private institutions; in 2020, this number has grown to almost 80% (79.5%).
The interest of universities was also analyzed in the panel, which considered the fact that until 1996 universities could not be for-profit; reality that changed in the following year. Thus, from that moment on, the number of enrollments in private institutions was much more concentrated in for-profit institutions.
The behavior of students continued to change over time and is reflected today. Before the pandemic, a movement caught the attention of researchers, who realized that there is already a strong migration from the adhesion of face-to-face courses to distance courses.
In 2020, for example, 80% of enrollments took place in private institutions, 62% took place in just 10 large educational groups; 60% of these enrollments were in distance learning courses; 47% of the students who enrolled studied distance learning courses with ENAD concept 1 and 2; and almost half of them dropped out with less than 2 school years.
The conclusion that researcher Maria Angélica Minhoto, coordinator of SoU Ciência and responsible for collecting and analyzing the data, is that these universities that form these large educational groups attract students with super low monthly fees and these, in turn, get into debt and give up course.
Another point is that in many cases, these groups make the acquisition of several institutions, to gain the prerogative of university autonomy and open courses without authorization from the MEC.
“The MEC needs to monitor and inspect these institutions. Brazil is already one of the countries with the largest number of private higher education institutions in the world. And it is necessary to rethink this behavior of meeting the needs of the financial market more than educational needs”, provokes the teacher.
