Folha debuts blog that highlights scientific production from Brazilian universities

By Robert

A leaf This week the blog Sou Ciência, which will address the role of universities in Brazil, the science that is produced in these institutions and how they relate to society debuts.

The blog will be signed by Soraya Smaili, pharmacist and professor at the Escola Paulista de Medicina at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo), Maria Angélica Minhoto, professor of education at the university, and Pedro Arantes, professor of art history at the same institution.

Currently, Sou Ciência is already a study group and “think tank” linked to Unifesp that thinks about the role of the university in Brazilian society. It was founded by Smaili, Minhoto and Arantes in July 2021.

The group works in lines of research that analyze the impacts of quota policies for higher education, demonstrate the relevance of science in combating the pandemic and combat denialism. According to Smaili, all these aspects will be explored in the blog.

“We felt a lack of data on higher education and on science produced in universities. So we proposed the [grupo] I am Science, seeking to make this contribution and fill a kind of gap that we have seen in this area”, says Smaili.

The pharmaceutical company also explains that the blog will not only focus on scientific dissemination, but that there is great concern in examining how the science produced in the country can impact the formulation of public policies.

“[Vamos explorar] like how much everything we produce [nas universidades] can contribute to public policies. Not only focused on the education sector, but also on science, technology and social and economic development”, he says.
