Sou Ciência promotes seminar on science funding
With support from Sheetthe Sou_Ciência center, focused on studies on scientific production, will hold a virtual seminar on funding education and science in Brazil next Tuesday (31), at 3:00 pm.
Covid-19 highlighted scientific production in the country. A survey carried out by Sou_Ciência in 2021 indicated that almost 70% of Brazilians attach extreme importance to science, a growth of 47% compared to the period before the pandemic.
The study also pointed out that 62% are against reducing the budget for scientific research. The seminar will discuss the challenges of investing in science and education, with a focus on federal universities and research institutes.
At the event, the impact of funding cuts for scientific production will be discussed. In the last ten years, Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) and the CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) lost around 51% of their research budget, according to data from the SBPC (Brazilian Society for Progress of Science).
The seminar will be attended by Helena Nader, president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Fernanda de Negri, researcher at the Institute for Applied Economic Research, Nelson Cardoso Amaral, president of the National Association for Research in Financing for Education (Fineduca), and Soraya Smaili, coordinator of Sou_Ciência and author of the blog Sheet of the same name, which addresses scientific production in Brazil. The mediation is provided by Ângela Pinho, a newspaper reporter.
The event also has the support of the Serrapilheira Institute. The broadcast will take place live on Sou_Ciência YouTube channel.
